...Bettie was a marvel, shaking her tush in those Klaw non-music videos. (Astonishingly, there was no music in the downtown lofts that made do as her movie sets; whatever she danced to was in her head.) But Irving had other aspirations than being the Busby Berkeley of schmutz. A businessman above all, he needed to please his clientele. Some wanted to see Bettie don leather frocks. That was fine with Klaw. He was open to suggestions, so long as there was no nudity; Irving thought that would keep him safe from the feds. And though Bettie posed nude...

...events. "Opinions of those who remember the crackdown have changed over time," says Barbara Szacka, a sociology professor at Warsaw's Academy of Social Psychology. The generational split is visible at the trial. A dozen mostly elderly men go regularly to the courthouse, a monumental prewar edifice in downtown Warsaw, to show support for Jaruzelski, while young activists picket outside with banners reading WHEN WILL WE SEE JUSTICE...

Industrial jobs and residents disappeared from the Tennessee city of Chattanooga in the 1980s, but thanks to a local task force, its downtown stands revitalized, with newly created hospitality and leisure sector jobs boosting employment and income levels far more quickly than in comparable cities through the '90s. Elsewhere in the U.S. old industrial towns seem keen to learn, at least. Greater Ohio, a network of groups working to revitalize cities in the state, recently ordered 60 copies of the LSE's guide to distribute to local city mayors...
