...REMEMBRANCE Just a short walk from drab, downtown Gangtok is the nostalgic Nor-Khill Hotel, tel: (91-3592) 225637. Built by the Chogyal (King) of Sikkim in 1932 as a guesthouse for visiting dignitaries, it's a stunning example of old-school Sikkimese architecture. And its red pillars, peaked roof and intricate carvings are a huge contrast to the concrete blocks of modern Gangtok. Whiling away an afternoon on the terrace is a pleasant diversion from shopping for handicrafts. It also offers a chance to bump into celeb guests like Bollywood star Danny Dengzopa or the Dalai Lama. ...under giant skylights, smoked cigarettes and checked each other out. The McDonald's was packed, as were four tapas bars. Seventeen-year-old Leticia Gonzalez said that while she would still hang out in Madrid at night, she thought she would shop here. The view, perhaps needless to say, is my favorite part of the building, but a number of other features of the building have proven surprisingly pleasing as well...
Concordia gained international attention for last year’s September 9 riot, which shut down the scheduled speech of former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. During the riot, a motley assortment of activists managed to occupy parts of the downtown campus, break windows and viciously taunt the speech’s ticket-holders. An elderly Holocaust survivor was reportedly spit on, while an Israeli flag was burned. As police barricades separated pro-Palestinian and pro-Israeli students, I walked by with a first-year art history class on a museum trip. Having already survived one year at the cantankerous...
...staff at Miss Saigon would agree. With its bistro-style setting and fresh baguettes for banh mi (spicy grilled-pork sandwiches), the restaurant emphasizes the French influence on Vietnamese food and has won fans in the tony neighborhood near Rice University and Houston's medical center. Downtown, Mai's has a strong following for its noodle soups, chicken-coconut curry and fresh lemon soda. And it's open until 2:30 a.m. every day, a gift to restless road warriors in this early-to-bed city...
