...store for prospectors in the clearing called Portland where the Willamette River runs into the mighty Columbia. The first Frank, Sigmund, joined Meier in partnership and married his daughter. By 1883, when the Northern Pacific came through, they were prosperous. After that, as Portland's deep draft harbor thrived and the cool city grew around it, the Meiers and Franks became rich and powerful. For years their 15-story building has been the financial fulcrum of the city, its advertising the lifeblood of Portland's three newspapers. And the store has won the final tribute of a nickname...
...gone about its business elsewhere. Annually I. L. O. holds a meeting at which its 62 member-nations are represented by three kinds of delegates; one representing each country's labor; another, its employers; and two, its Government. Morris, who attracted a modicum of attention last summer by inserting the name of their snub-nosed Pekingese, Rose, in the New York Social Register. Artists Gallatin, Shaw, Frelinghuysen & Morris hung up some...

The German delegation to the Paris peace conference delivered a substantiated contradiction against that theory on May 29, 1919, duly received by the Allied and Associate Governments and never revoked. Therefore, when the unamended draft was signed June 28, 1919. these Governments were fully conscious of the fact that the German Government held the reverse opinion toward the so-called "war guilt." As a matter of course...
Omitted from the Court Circular, usually meticulous in announcing movements of members of the Royal Family, was a luncheon at Buckingham Palace last week of the Queen Mother, the King and Queen and the Earl & Countess of Athlone. This was to consider the draft of a financial settlement for the Duke of Windsor brought from Austria by Sir Walter Monckton, and the Royal Family had to face among other matters the Duke's demand that provision be made not only for himself during his lifetime but for Mrs. Simpson, irrespective of whether he lives or dies. Windsor...
