He's very intelligent, and not at all flamboyant...I had it worked out that they were going to dismiss [the draft evasion charges] if he would go around and talk to youth clubs...and also do some work for Nixon...Mitchell turned it down...Two years after that I got back at poor John when I was representing Martha for a divorce...

Most of SALT'S major points, of course, had already been negotiated and were contained in a 62-page draft. The main part of the draft is a treaty running to 1985, limiting both the U.S. and U.S.S.R. to 2,250 strategic weapons systems: a mix of long-range bombers, land-based inter-continental ballistic missiles and the submarine-launched ballistic missiles. This would be a much more modest achievement than the sharp reductions that the Carter Administration had sought in March 1977. Vance was determined to resist because any tampering with even minor points of a text in the late stages of talks risks...

...like the draft and the Ml rifle, C rations will become a thing of the past. In their place the Army has developed MREs (meal, ready-to-eat), precooked and packed in nice little aluminum-foil pouches. The new fare includes steak, swiss; ham, sliced; chicken, a la king; and beef, stew; along with chocolate cookies, fruit and brownies and freeze-dried coffee. The Pentagon says it has tested the new rations under both tropical and arctic conditions and even on generals at the Defense Logistics Agency, who were not told that they were being served MREs in the dining...
