Three Harvard men--Robert Edmond Jones, Donald Oenslager, and Lee Simonson--are the artists, whose theatrical designs are now on exhibit in Fogg. While these designs prove that all three are excellent draftsmen, colorists, and masters of composition, their real work is not hanging in the galleries. They are scenic designers, and their finished creations are physical settings on a stage. Jones has said that a scene design is no more than an "intention." These artists' designs must be judged as "intentions," without consideration of such qualities of an actual setting as plasticity and compatibility with the play's flow...
Gruber's father, a famed stained-glass maker of Alsace, encouraged him to draw but refused to let him have his paints in the afternoons unless his morning drawing lessons went well. Under such discipline, Francis Gruber grew up to be one of the finest draftsmen of his generation, though his lines almost never described round, soft shapes. Hard, mean, digging, they hinted constantly at the pain that plagued him. His death meant the disappearance, wrote Paris Critic Waldemar George, of "the only painter who was capable of giving to French art a sense of ... the human values...
...pictures. His silvery nudes belonged "to no nationality, no epoch. I have had 3,000 models and I don't need them any more." He had imparted an oriental delicacy to such details as the hair and toes, but generally slurred over the major elements that better draftsmen are apt to emphasize: the thrust of a knee or elbow, the twist of a torso or the solid bulge of a thigh. Shining out against deep black backgrounds, his nudes had more flow than form...
...Work. Loewy and his 143 designers, architects and draftsmen were busier than ever spreading that name & fame on a dozen new projects. They had signed up to modernize Raglands department store on Texas' famed King Ranch (TIME, Dec. 15, 1947); they had just completed the first part of a face-lifting for Manhattan's Gimbel Brothers (cried Gimbels in full-page ads: "We are speechless"). Their new two-level Greyhound bus (the Scenicruiser) was being road-tested on Michigan roads. For California they were planning a state fair...
...stamps are designed by four busy men in the Treasury's Bureau of Engraving and Printing. All four have been to art school and gone through an apprenticeship in the Bureau, designing ornamental scrolls and script for banknotes. But they are primarily draftsmen; the designs themselves usually come to them down a long bureaucratic ladder...
