...anomaly: a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Princeton in 1940, a Wall Street lawyer after that, he headed the Pheonix Program in Viet Nam in the mid-'60s. Daniel Ellsberg '52 and others estimate that possibly 70,000 anti-Saigon government leaders were killed in that program's giant dragnet...

...effort to track down the Philadelphia killer, some 150 federal and state disease detectives-physicians, biologists, chemists-set to work in Pennsylvania in a massive microbe hunt that resembled a police dragnet. Working round the clock, state officials turned an office in Harrisburg into a sort of "war room." One wall of the makeshift headquarters was covered with a map pierced with colored pins tracing the outbreak of Legionnaires' disease-red pins for deaths, yellow ones for reported illness. At several desks, shirtsleeved workers transferred information onto large sheets of graph paper. At others, workers telephoned the state...

...that Hughes had been supposed to sign an important document, possibly a will, several days before his death, but was too ill to do so. Noah Dietrich, Hughes' former chief lieutenant, said he had seen a will, but that was back in the 1950s. Investigators began a massive dragnet search for a will, combing through Hughes' old map cases, flight bags, books and safe-deposit boxes. It is good to be reminded where Woodward and Bernstein led the nation, good to be reminded that these men werehumbled. But in a sense that was an entirely different story. It is perhaps naive for the film to imply that all that was needed to bring the President down...

Daley's Dragnet. That, however, appears to be the only part of the machine that is weakening in Chicago. True, Daley's dragnet was not the only cause of Walker's loss. The prickly Governor had managed to alienate almost every organized power in the state-the legislature, unions, the teachers and especially the political liberals, who could not forgive him for supporting capital punishment and cutbacks in state aid to education. Walker also failed to gain the backing of any of Chicago's three daily newspapers. Democratic Senator Adlai Stevenson III described the Governor...
