...hope for the semi on Thursday was that Spain and Russia would stage a drag race up and down the pitch in Vienna. Russia had run roughshod over Holland - the odds-on favorite and tournament glamour boys - in the quarters, pouring into the Dutch end like the relentless rains that seemed to show up at every kickoff of Euro 2008. We learned to pronounce the names of strikers Roman Pavlyuchenko and Andre Arshavin (I'm still working on Diniyar Bilyaletdinov). The Russians had gotten progressively better, and their swarming attacks, their pure athleticism, were too much for Sweden and Greece...

...economic relief will not come a moment too soon: On Thursday, TIME witnessed a long row of men standing shoulder to shoulder in the Gaza surf, as if gathered for prayer. One or two men would wade furiously forward and cast their nets in a wide, swooping arc, and drag them back to shore; not once, in an hour, did they catch a single fish. The sea around Gaza is empty; factories are closed, and over 80% of the territory's 1.5 million residents live on meager food handouts from U.N. relief agencies...

...laughs uncomfortably and scans the teeming plain. More than 2,000 residents of this parish, Lokali, have come to collect food aid on a hot Saturday in May, and though the crowds have dwindled as the sun sinks and people drag or carry home their sacks - a month's ration of mostly corn, with some beans - many recipients remain. They stand or sit in groups, waiting for food if they haven't yet been called, and arguing over how to divide the rations they've received. At the center with the food stash, police clutch assault rifles to scare...

...with any electric car is the strength of its battery, and GEM has a good one. You can drive for up to 30 miles on a single charge, and repowering the battery takes six to eight hours, using any standard outlet. A GEM won't win a drag race - maximum speed is 25 mph, though with a surprising amount of pep. I took a four-seat GEM for a test ride through New York City's Central Park. Check out my experience here...

...result? The Aptera's drag will be a third of an average car's and less than half of the Prius', which now has the lowest drag in the industry. Cheap technology allowed Fambro to create such an aerodynamic design on a limited budget. For $50,000 Fambro found some off-the-shelf software--the same kind NASA uses to test the drag of its space vehicles. To keep drag as low as possible, for example, the three-wheeled car has no side-view mirrors--the driver has 180° rear visibility with the help of rear-mounted cameras. He estimates...
