...next to the Reflecting Pool, which stretches between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument. The Reflecting Pool is very deceptive. It looks calm and deep and beautiful. But actually it is only two feet deep. Three or four times a year, maintenance men from the U.S. Park Service drain the pool and pick up the garbage on the bottom. Then you can see that it is only two feet deep. And that is very disappointing...

Five years ago, the Trustees voted to embark on a program that they hoped would lead to eventual accreditation of the Law School by the American Bar Association. (The Law School is also unaccredited.) And so Calvin Coolidge College began to die. The College is a drain financially and physically on the Law School. For the Law School to meet the ABA's requirements, the school is going to be forced to retain the money and land now used by the college. ...actual life of the book seems to me not in its thesis about the withdrawal of God, but in its repulsive vision of the absence of love and grace from human relations. Unfortunately the thesis seems to crush the book's main character, to drain the life from him. Piet is, supposedly, the scapegoat of the couples. And it is the group's judgment that Piet was used by Foxy in order to discard her cold-fish husband. But to see him as a scapegoat is to accept him as will less--and so the author seems to have viewed...

But at $2,500,000 a plane, the British-made engines meant a $235 million drain on the U.S. balance of payments.
