Unfortunately for me, a proud Valley-dweller, it won't be until the end of the summer (the optimistic forecast) that the line is extended across the Hollywood Hills. Besides that however, living in the Valley is no drawback. While it may be a social faux pas to mention my address at parties, the spaciousness, easy access to the local park, library and YMCA (not to mention low rent) make me glad I'm not living in a noisy, crowded apartment ensconced in some flashy zip code which would not deign to have a bus stop between their palm trees...

TICK TOC One drawback of the Lyme-disease vaccine that came out in April was that it took so long to kick in. Doctors were supposed to administer it in three injections over the course of a year. Now there's a reprieve. A new study shows that the shots work as well when given over six months. But don't go rolling around in the grass just yet. Teachers have it made. They get to send students to detention, assign homework and give tests. They can issue commands like "compare and contrast" and watch their charges squirm. There is but one drawback to wielding such power: the daunting task of grading essays. For every student who pulls an all-nighter wading through Great Expectations, there is a teacher who has to slog through dozens of tortured expositions on the symbolism of Miss Havisham's aborted wedding feast...
