Chaos reigns. Then Bob Strauss, the party's guru in chief, comes onto the podium. For President, he intones in a syrupy drawl, we must nominate a great American and my fellow Texan -- George Bush. During the stunned silence that follows, Strauss adds a cunning hook: For Vice President, we should select one of our young Democratic chargers, someone whose depth and experience compare favorably with Quayle's lack of same. American voters like to diffuse authority and have scant respect for Quayle. The Democratic ticket will...

Good directing is essential in any production, but the actors really make A Lie of the Mind a theatrical gem. Every performer seems to spit out a Western drawl with ease. Martin's character is particularly demanding because Beth is physically as well as verbally handicapped, and Martin performs as though her disability is real. Hayes handles the fast-paced rhythm of Shepard's dialogue almost flawlessly and commands the audience's attention every time she appears on stage. The result is a stretch for him as an actor, and fun for the audience...

Maybe 170 players are left of the 194 who began chasing the $835,000 first prize with $10,000 each in chips. From three tables away, a raspy Texas drawl cuts through the watery green air of Binion's cardroom. Amarillo Slim Preston is telling stories, fogging his opponents with rascally nonsense. Something about beating somebody in 312 straight games of gin rummy. Something about riding a camel through a casino in Marrakech. Preston is a tough, lanky, 61-year...

Romano appears to be a man of senatorial affability--an earnest gladhander who loves to greet strangers and to seek out their motivations. With a lanky frame that easily tops six feet and a genial, syrupy Southern drawl, he is given to wide, simple, declarative gestures...
