Having gone to high school in Manhattan I am no stranger to the daily commute. This only increased my dread of what I knew would become a stressful daily routine in order to get to midtown Manhattan from my home in Brooklyn. I would have to pay $2 for the pleasure of waiting in a hot, sticky and smelly station. When a train finally came, the only car with seats would be the one where the air conditioning was broken. If I chose air conditioning over a seat, I knew I could expect a ride crammed in with fellow commuters...
Usually I dread the G-8. for a journalist, it's the ultimate BOGSAT: a Bunch of Guys Sitting Around a Table. The guys do happen to lead the world's richest countries, but any really interesting exchanges at their annual get-togethers tend to get saved for their memoirs. Instead, we are treated to a ritual photo of the leaders in funny shirts to dress up a turgid communiqué, disgorged at a press center far, far from the action. While there is never a lack of assassins ready to throw the first stone, almost every generation encounters righteous gentiles without whom Jewish survival would have been impossible. Halter becomes an actor in the drama, much as Alex Haley did in Roots, piercing the narrative with his own meditations: "We are periodically asked to choose between the Land and the Book...
...voice as he said this. The Gods of Wisdom in Washington have determined that Bush is in a trough. His poll numbers are declining. His approval rating is back where it was-in the mid-40s-before it was artificially inflated during the 2004 campaign by the dread prospect that John Kerry might replace him. Social Security reform is widely assumed to be dead. The war in Iraq is stymied and losing public support. There is talk that Bush has squandered the goodwill he earned by winning re-election, that the Democrats' sapping obstructionist strategy has weakened him. There...
