...Congressional Black Caucus maneuvered to have the matter placed in the hands of a judiciary subcommittee headed by black Congressman John Conyers. Conyers began as an avowed Hastings sympathizer. But as the hearings unfolded, he says, "the totality of the evidence began to pile up." Last week Conyers drew a standing ovation from the House floor as he pressed his colleagues to vote for impeachment. The judge "has failed to measure up," the Michigan Democrat declared. Voting in favor of impeachment was a painful task for the civil rights coalition in the House. The dissenters also shared the anxiety. Said...

...crime was perfect only in its ghoulish symbolism: the perpetrators allegedly drew blood from poor people, paying them as little as 50 cents a vial, then falsely claimed the samples came from Medicaid patients and billed the Government for millions of dollars' worth of bogus laboratory tests. In 1984 he sold the team for $350,000 to investors who moved it to Pittsfield, Mass. A few months later, Rich picked up the Triple A Wichita Aeros for $1 million and moved the team to Buffalo. In 1987 the new Bisons attracted close to 500,000 to their games, the best attendance in the minors. This year the Bisons are playing...

...papers reported the incident, naming Cohen as the source of the leak. MARLENE JOHNSON ARRESTS DISCLOSED BY WHITNEY ALLY, declared the front-page headline in the Star Tribune. Columnist Jim Klobuchar, a friend of Democratic Gubernatorial Candidate Rudy Perpich, then decried Cohen as a "sleazy" player. Cartoonist Steve Sack drew Cohen trick- or-treating at Perpich headquarters dressed as a trash can labeled "Last minute campaign smears...
