Ironically, the baseball strike occurs at a moment when the game is breaking all attendance records. If the interruption goes on for long, Americans might even begin to drift away spiritually from the game. The most profound charm of baseball is an illusion, really-the illusion that the game connects America now with an earlier America that we remember (falsely, in so many ways) as democratic and sweet and robust and green and essentially innocent. The strike has slapped some unlikable touches of reality upon the illusion. The charm may be a little slow in returning. -By Lance Morrow...
CHANGES IN the paper's audience, obviously, caused much of the drift. The people who once smoked dope (regular updates on its supply were printed by the Realp), now drink wine (samples were regularly rated by reviewers in the paper's last years). The crowd that once knew about Vietnam now suspected El Salvador, so the Realp suspected too. Old readers dressed as they like; these days, throwbacks to sloppiness were likely to be nabbed by the Fashion Police, that particularly obnoxious feature. In a more threatening manifestation of Peking's fear that the drift toward democracy has gone too far, secret police also rounded up two key dissidents, the first such arrests since...
...danced with the company and knew its strengths-a rich, eclectic repertory, an unbroken record of presenting some of the world's best dancers. He was also aware of some recent flaws. Performance standards had grown erratic, particularly in the corps; management tended to let dancers succeed or drift without much direction. Recalling that year, Baryshnikov says, "I wanted to look at the dancers carefully, clean up the corps. I put all my concentration on what I wanted and how I wanted it." When rehearsals began last September, so did the reassessment of dancers. "There were some little tragedies...
