...Harvard Hall drill inevitably raises the issue of the place of the Reserve Officer Training Corps, and of the military more generally, on Harvard's campus. But let us not get so caught up in this relatively parochial matter that we ignore the larger questions the very existence of ROTC in its current state should evoke. For a remilitarized country and a war-torn world exist in spite of a demilitarized Harvard...
...crisp Saturday morning, and exercise instructor Ludmilla Fedina is barking orders like a drill sergeant. "Don't be lazy. You have five more seconds," she cries to Luba Yeremeeva, 27, a machine-tool worker who is pumping away on a Soviet-made stationary bike. Galina Usochina, 47, a factory engineer, turns red as borscht as she works out on a rowing machine. ...writing you this letter in response to the article which appeared on Tuesday, March 21, 1989, entitled "ROTC Holds First Drill on Campus in 20 Years." Although the article was factually correct, I was greatly disturbed by what Jaron Bourke '88-'89 and Professor Wylie said. Bourke said that "the militarization of college students is the unfortunate consequence of financial need and lack of commitment to higher education for all people." Although the financial aid of the ROTC program is helpful, it is not the only reason I decided to enroll in the Navy ROTC. I take great pride...
