Nurse Jackie is getting the jump on a TV calendar heavy with new medical shows. (Hawthorne, with Jada Pinkett Smith as a nurse, debuts on TNT on June 16.) But this black comedy is less melodramatic than your typical prime-time IV drip. Nursing, as Jackie practices it at New York City's All Saints Hospital, is hard labor: taxing drudgery that ruins your back and gets you punched out by the occasional unhinged visitor. ...launched her misbehaving son's drug problems by dosing him with Valium turns out to be tragic, squirm-inducing and funny: "All right, Ma, you win, I don't feel like arguin'/ I'll do it, pop and gobble it and start wobbling/ Stumble, hobble, tumble, slip, drip, then I fall in bed/ With a bottle of meds." ...always got one eye on Famous Writer's Twitter feed, waiting for the interruption that will distract me from my own, nonfamous existence. I think I'm in danger of mistaking my connection to Famous Writer for an actual human relationship instead of what it is--a slow drip of basically trivial data that I've been using as an excuse to get out of the hard work of being alone with myself.
