...harmless drivel they pump out for the next hour is entirely uninteresting. Their attempt at a bad boy look, with all-black outfits and the occasional smoldering glance would probably have elicited multiple beatings in a rough neighbourhood. As vocalists, their wispy sound has to be augmented substantially by a large backing band and background vocals. As for dancing, O-Town’s bored movements lack either energy or real soul...

...Patient: Kevin Costner. Diagnosis: Delusions of Grandeur and Overall Yuckiness. Though Costner’s career has been nothing if a total muddle, there’s one thing that’s crystal clear: America doesn’t care about him anymore. After enduring drivel like The Postman, Message in a Bottle and For the Love of the Game (I exclude Waterworld because I actually think it was a darn good movie), even the most forgiving folk promised to boycott all future Costner exercises-in-ego. ...extended fiction, Shopgirl, is that it's not funny. At least not the laugh-out-loud-and-frighten-the-horses funny of Martin's early stand-up comedy, or of his performance as the man-woman in All of Me, or the humor pieces in his collection Pure Drivel. Shopgirl, which really is about a 28-year-old woman behind the glove counter at the Neiman Marcus department store in Beverly Hills, offers quieter pleasures: a delicate portrait of people inflicting subtle pain on others and themselves, and an appeal to the intelligent heart. Sitting in a restaurant on Manhattan...
