France's history-21,794,974 voters. The drone of a functionary's voice brought silence. Figures flashed on a screen. From loudspeakers blared the names of successful candidates for the National Assembly. Soon an unfamiliar sound began to take on a rhythm of familiarity. "Department of Finistère," said a voice, "Monsieur Demarquet, Ood-ka. Department of Seine-et-Oise, Monsieur Couturaud...

Besides these hard-shelled projects. Holloman also works with all-too-soft human flesh. The famed Space Surgeon John Paul Stapp (TIME, Sept. 12) speeds across the desert on his rocket sled to see how much strain the human body can stand. Another Holloman specialty is radio-controlled drone aircraft, which are used as targets and as a means of improving missile guidance systems. Perhaps the most picturesque program is "space biology," which includes sending living organisms (bacteria to monkeys) up to the edge of space in rockets. Bell's VTOL has a glider's fuselage and the wing of a light commercial airplane. Hung under the wings on swivels are two small jet. engines made by Fairchild for use in drone targets and guided missiles. Each weighs 300 Ibs. and has 1,000 Ibs. of static thrust. Since the whole airplane, engines and all, weighs only about 2,000 Ibs., the twin jets, directed downward, can lift it vertically off the ground. Controlling a craft that rises in this manner is a tricky business. Even more tricky is converting it to horizontal flight...

...sustain the early tone; and Moss Hart's script lends him a hand. Drama strides the scene: Is the son as mad as the father? Love (Maggie McNamara) walks in, to soothe his fevered brow. And just when the action has settled down to a nice homey drone of hysteria, almost as dull as Saturday night in Bedlam-bang! Brother John (John Derek) puts a bullet into Abraham Lincoln, and the public takes its revenge on Edwin with a full barrage-of vegetables...
