Cloveland has waited out injuries to Luke Easter, Bob Feller, and Larry Doby. But its percentage has risen well over .100 points. Boston has replaced Walt Dropo in the lineup with Clyde Vollner. ...Billy was a regular. In 1948, after three years in the minors (Atlanta and Louisville), he joined the Red Sox as their first baseman. Early this season, in a characteristic slashing slide, Billy chipped a bone in his left leg. The Red Sox had to call up Walt Dropo from the minors. Control in Philadelphia. Now that Ted Williams may be lost to them for the season (see above), the Boston Red Sox are more than ever grateful to have rookie First Baseman Walter Dropo.
