...former Hollywood film producer, Dominick was a creature of parties and a confessed name-dropper. With his horn-rimmed glasses and wonderful suits, he personified the word dapper, but there was an almost impish quality about him too. He made friends with everybody and wanted to know about every little thing. The last time we spoke, he told me about being in a hospital with Farrah Fawcett and how brave she was. Even on his deathbed, his curiosity was insatiable...

...this phenomenon generally happens when you're driving something a lot more expensive. You'd expect the killer design of the Audi R-8, for instance, to elicit some oohs and aahs, and it doesn't disappoint; it's a dazzler. The Bentley Continental Supersports is another jaw dropper that can motor along at 200 m.p.h., if you call that motoring. But the Audi goes for $113,000; the Bentley costs $100,000 more. His statistics were heavily massaged and challenged by his opponents, but he had muddied his greatest vulnerability - the stagflating Iranian economy. The real jaw dropper, however, was Ahmadinejad's willingness to attack in the most personal terms. He attacked Mousavi for being supported by former President Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, whom he flatly called corrupt (a widespread belief among reformers and conservatives alike); he attacked Mousavi's wife Zahra Rahnavard, a famous artist and activist...

...when will it begin? Right now. It's a decent, if familiar, fantasy with a glorious visual design: a lovely jumble of Victorian buildings, sleekly modern costumes and Jules Vernean spaceships. The film's climactic battle, between two imposing CGI ice bears, is a literal jaw-dropper. And its two lead performances made me hope there will be sequels - even if Weitz can't infuse this first episode with the animating spark of grand-scale moviemaking...
