...Drs. William James and Charles Horace Mayo, best-known U. S. medical team, dread publicity. It hurts business at their expensive clinic in remote Rochester, Minn, where they and the 400 doctors whom they employ treat more than 700 new sick people every day and where in a few weeks they expect to work on their 1,000,000th patient. Essentially the Mayo brothers care little for wealth. Although they charge every patient precisely according to national credit agencies' reports, one fourth of the Mayo patients are worth nothing and pay no fees. The Mayo Clinic...

Another notable office utility first reported last week was an obtundent (desensitizing) paste developed by Manhattan's Drs. Harold Aaron Osserman and Abraham Taub. Like Manhattan's Dr. Leroy L. Hartman's painkiller which attracted attention last year (TIME, Feb. 3, 1936), the new obtundent is supposed to deaden the fibrils of nerves which are supposed to run through the dentine of teeth. Critics of the Hartman and Osser-man-Taub anesthetics pointed out that, 1) it is doubtful that dentine contains nerve tissues, 2) the chemicals do not always work, 3) such news makes patients expect...

Mystery Particle. Newest and most mysterious particle in the collection of atomic physics is the little thing discovered in cloud-chambers last spring by Drs. Jabez Curry Street & Edward Carl Stevenson of Harvard and by Dr. Carl David Anderson of California Institute of Technology (TIME, May 10). It does not con-form-as did the positive electron- to any mathematical predictions. Not much is known about it except that it is heavier than an electron, lighter than a proton, possessed of high penetrating power. In Denver last week Dr. Street announced that it may be positive as well as negative...

Discovered in 1910 by Drs. H. H. Dale and H. Barger, benzedrine sulfate became known to the medical world as a strong stimulant to the central nervous system. This year and last it has been used by a few students in the University prior to the examination period as a cure for fatigue and as a means to increased mental efficiency. To discourage the practice Arlie V. Bock, M.D., Ph.D., Henry K. Oliver Professor of Hygiene, now in charge of the Hygiene Department has issued the following statement...
