...Bone taken from young cows has "proved very satisfactory so far for grafting in humans," reported Drs. William B. Fischer and Irvin Clayton of Northwestern University Medical School. Calf-bone grafting has been used on twelve patients, whose own bone cells are believed to have formed new crystals around the scaffolding of the calf bone. Advantages of calf bone: it is available in unlimited quantities, is cheap and simple...

...Roger Black of the institute's clinical branch had similar complaints: the physician cannot regulate relative doses of steroid and aspirin in the combined pills to suit the requirements of the individual patient; some patients will be getting less steroid or aspirin than they need, others too much. Drs. Alan K. Done and Vincent C. Kelley of the University of Utah College of Medicine produced new scientific evidence of a theory that might obviate any need to soup up common aspirin. In addition to acting on inflammations, said Drs. Done and Kelley, salicylates (aspirin's family) affect...

...Smoking, already tied to lung cancer, picked up another morbid relation when Drs. Francis C. Lowell, William Franklin, Alan L. Michelson and Irving W. Schiller, all of Massachusetts Memorial Hospital, told a Boston meeting of the American Medical Association that they have discovered an association between smoking and obstructive pulmonary emphysema. In a study of 34 victims of emphysema- a swelling and rupture of the lung's tiny air sacs that can prove disabling or even fatal-the doctors discovered that 100% of the patients smoked, and that they smoked an average of twice as many "pack years" (packs...

This invitation to experts to change their beliefs about mechanisms of im munity was offered by Drs. William E. Petersen and Berry Campbell, who have been working on it (with a dozen colleagues off and on) for ten years. Paul ("Magic Bullet") Ehrlich had shown that antibodies, missing from the blood of calves at birth, can pass to the young in the dam's colostrum. It had been thought that the human species, whether babe or grown man, was unable to pick up these protective antibodies. Not so, say Petersen and Campbell: man and a slew of barnyard beasts...

...Stars. Drs. Greenstein and Fowler, backed by a group of British cosmologists, believe that the universe was formed gradually out of a cloud of plain hydrogen over billions of years. Old stars that condensed first from the cosmic cloud were made entirely of hydrogen; there was nothing else to be made of. As nuclear reactions took place inside them, they turned partly into helium by fusion processes similar to those that generate the energy of hydrogen bombs. They also cooked up middleweight elements such as carbon and oxygen...
