...They Did It. The Rockefeller researchers, Drs. Robert B. Merrifield and Bernd Gutte, began their experiment with a tiny bead of plastic, onto which they hooked a 124-link chain of amino acids. There are 20 different amino acids, and, because all proteins, including enzymes, are made of amino-acid chains, the acids have been recognized for many years as the "building blocks of life." The exact sequence and identity of successive acids in the ribonuclease chain were recently established, and the Rockefeller team's job was to link them, one at a time. The painstaking process involved...
...Merck researchers, Drs. Robert G. Denkewalter and Ralph F. Hirschmann, went at it differently. They prepared groups of six to 17 amino acids in linked series. They then put these groups together to form the ultimate 124-link chain. Their product turned out to be the same as the Rockefeller synthetic enzyme; its identity was proved by the way in which it broke down ribonucleic acid...
Physicians are naturally ultracautious about giving an addictive drug to known addicts. So Drs. Dole and Nyswander began conservatively, with small numbers of patients. They insisted then, and still do, that the addiction must have persisted for four years, that all patients have records of arrests as a result of their habit, and must have failed in using previous cure methods. At first, the doctors met vociferous opposition from fellow physicians and laymen who worried about the morality of giving drugs to addicts. Yet as the number of successful cases grew, they won not only increasing professional tolerance but also...
Crime Cut. The program has now been under way for five years, and Drs. Dole and Nyswander report in the A.M.A. Journal that in the first four of those years: "The number of criminal addicts who have been rehabilitated is enough to empty a moderate-sized jail." More than a thousand other addicts are now waiting for the treatment. Of the first 723 male patients, only 15% were employed before treatment. Within three to six months, the proportion rose to 53% at work or in school, and now hovers near 70%. An additional 20%, though not employed, are rated...
...Stanford University, several participants advocated registration of all guns-if only, said one, to "see if this reduces crime or death rates." Other preventive measures were linked to the predictability of assassin types. Drs. Robert L. Taylor and Alfred E. Weisz noted that of the nine men involved in the eight known attempts on the lives of American Presidents, all were Caucasian males aged 24 to 40. All were smaller than average in stature. All were unknowns, except John Wilkes Booth. Most importantly, "each of these men had some cause or grievance that appeared obsessional, if not delusional, in intensity...
