GESTATIONAL CHORIOCARCINOMA. Before chemotherapy, this cancer that originates in the placentas of pregnant women killed 90% of its victims within a year. Drs. Min Chiu Li of Nassau Hospital, Mineola, N.Y., and Roy Hertz of New York Medical College, Valhalla, N.Y., have used chemotherapy to apparently cure up to 90% of patients diagnosed within four months of the onset of the disease...
Hanoi recently invited a quartet of American physicians-Drs. Morris Simon, Peter Wolff and Pierce Gardner of Harvard Medical School and George Roth of San Francisco-to inspect North Viet Nam's health-care system. The four spent a week touring rural and urban facilities. They said that they were able to see nearly everything they wished, though their hosts were obviously interested in showing off their best facilities. Interviewed by TIME last week, the doctors offered this appraisal...
...long suspected that there is a physiological basis for severe depression. They know that thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH), a substance released by the hypothalamus at the base of the brain, triggers the production of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH); now, they hypothesize that it may have another function as well. Drs. Arthur Prange Jr. and Ian Wilson of the University of North Carolina School of Medicine and the North Carolina department of mental health have found that TRH, which can be synthesized in the laboratory, seems to function as an antidepressant. They have used it experimentally to provide apparently safe relief...
...Dorothea Dix Hospital, ten other women responded equivocally to saline injections, but favorably to TRH when the two were administered in alternate sequence over a two-week period; no other medication was administered. Other experiments conducted independently reinforce those of Prange and Wilson. A team of researchers headed by Drs. Abba Kastin and Rudolph Ehrensing at the Veterans Administration Hospital in New Orleans reported in Lancet that its members administered TRH to five patients. All experienced relief from depression to some degree, and in at least two cases the improvement was marked...
...Soft, resilient and apparently harmless, rubber balloons seem like ideal toys for toddlers; some kids even like to nibble the knot. But balloons can also be dangerous, report three Honolulu physicians in the journal Pediatrics. Drs. Yi-Chuan Ching, J. Dempsey Huitt and George Nagao say that balloons that burst while being chewed or inflated can explode with such force that fragments of rubber may be propelled back into the mouth and windpipe, causing asphyxiation. The trio base their warning on a review of a score of fatal accidents plus their own observations of two other cases. One two-year...
