...cancer cells of the type called Ehrlich sarcoma are ground up, made into an emulsion and injected beneath the skins of mice, the animals invariably die. Drs. Alexandre Besredka and Ludwik Gross of the Pasteur Institute in Paris made small, weak doses of finely minced sarcoma tissue, injected them not beneath but in the skins of mice. In most of the animals metastases (cancer colonizations elsewhere in the body) took place and death followed. But in 10% the skin tumor caused by the injection dried up and disappeared and thereafter the mice were immune to that type of sarcoma...

Last week Drs. Eugene Lindsay Opie and Jules Freund of Cornell University Medical College reported in the Journal of Experimental Medicine a harmless preventive which they described as just as effective as BCG. They simply killed tubercle bacilli by heat and added heated horse serum. This protects an inoculated individual for one or two years, long enough, noted the doctors, "to influence favorably the delicate balance between asymptomatic or latent infection and progressive manifest disease that is characteristic of human tuberculosis...

Last May Dr. Anderson came out flatly for the new particle's existence. At the same time, Dr. Street of Harvard, who had been conducting independent researches of his own, also plumped for it. Fortheoretical reasons both Drs. Anderson and Street believe that the X-particle is not a part of the primary cosmic radiation, but arises from cosmic ray collisions in the upper air. An important question remained: What is the X-particle's mass? It appeared to be heavier than an electron but lighter than a proton. But this is a wide range, about as wide...

...Drs. DuBois & Hardy had decided to find out more about the body's mechanisms for mitigating heat and cold-that is, to establish the temperature zones in which various reactions occur. Every morning one or the other arrived at the laboratory at 9 o'clock, without breakfast, and undressed slowly to avoid dissipating heat because of muscular exertion. Then he entered a calorimeter, an insulated cabinet in which the temperature could be controlled over a range of 72° to 96°, and in which the amount of heat radiated by the naked body could be measured. Findings...
