Most people on the east coast easily recognize the word as a slur against Italian-American men of a certain class and swagger - and there was MTV just letting it rip. As the ramp up to the show continued, Italian-American anti-defamation groups started their drumbeat and the commercial was tweaked ever so slightly: the word "Guido" was replaced with "roommates" - which is more generally the premised cast of the reality show. But that was not the last we heard of Guido, well, because it's all over the show. Indeed, in the first episode of Jersey Shore...
Still, when she more carefully considers the effect of synthetic chords on her generally soft melodies, Jones puts the electric guitar to better use. The leadoff track, “Chasing Pirates,” uses a repeated electric tag and a harsher drumbeat to emphasize the claustrophobic redundancy of circular thoughts and dreams. “And I try not to dream but them possible schemes swim around / wanna drown me in synch,” she sings. Casablancas’ experimental instincts add a much-needed dose of variety to the album, seeing as many of his other tracks end up sounding like weak Strokes B-sides...
...unrelenting drumbeat of bad news confirms what many have sensed for some time. First, the globe is being cursed with more natural calamities than before. Second, the distribution of disaster is unequal. A U.N. report released in May studied natural disasters between 1975 and 2007 and found not only that the frequency of catastrophe is increasing because of climate change, unsafe cities and environmental degradation, but also that the brunt of tragedy is borne by poor countries least equipped to deal with such misfortune. In 2008, 98% of natural disaster - related fatalities occurred in Asia, according to the Worldwatch Institute...
