Further out of town this week is none other than the great drummer Roy Haynes, playing through this weekend with his sextet and Sandy's in Beverly. I'll never forget reading Frank Kofksy's liner notes on Coltrane's Selflessness album--that's the one with the fast version of My Favorite Things on side two. Roy Haynes was substituting for Coltrane's regular man, Elvin Jones, doing what I think was the finest drum work on any of the MFT cuts that Trane recorded. But in the liner notes, usually reserved for bubbling praise, Kofsky came down hard...
...really get on," Daltrey admits. "We just make music together." But recently Pete Townshend, the group's leader and author of most of its music, has intimated that Daltrey has been slighting his collaborators. Despite this, Daltrey, 31, claims: "There is no real problem. Keith Moon, our drummer, is a bit jealous, but that's because he always wanted to be a movie star." The Who blitzkrieg of North America will open on schedule, Nov. 20 in Houston, and presumably intramural tensions can be vented onstage. After all, the group first became famous for smashing guitars, trashing amplifiers...
...began seven years ago when the Longmuir brothers, Bass Guitarist Alan, then 19, and Drummer Derek, then 16, started a rock group called the Saxons. They rehearsed in their parents' tenement apartment. "They had the most patched-up bunch of electronic junk I'd ever seen," says Tam Paton, their manager. They also had, he recalls, "a freshness and an eagerness to please that were very appealing." A perhaps marketable, boy-next-door look, in other words...
...some of the other traditions of fanatic Orangeism are dying out. One of the true traditions of the Orange parade, the lambeg drum--weighing about 40 pounds and fabricated from oak, ash and goatskin (only the skin of the she-goat will do)--is just about extinct. A lambeg drummer used canes instead of drumsticks and during the course of a single parade, he'd break more than ten of them. That's because the drummer hits the drum as hard as he can. In the process, he hits his knuckles against the edge...
Rock Nail. If Castaneda was their spiritual mentor, the late Gram Parsons, who was among the first to combine country music with the energy of rock, was their musical inspiration. The Eagles' tunes, performed on three rock guitars paced by a drummer and a bass guitar, have more wail than twang. They are in fact a somewhat unlikely assemblage. Drummer Don Henley, 28, and Guitarists Frey, 26, and Don Felder, 27, have roots in rock. Bernie Leadon, 28, is country-trained, while Randy Meisner, 29, remains partial to Motown blues...
