...reunion of McKenzie-Condon's Chicagoans-the band organized by Guitarist Eddie Condon and Kazooist Red McKenzie in the 1920s. Among those present: Condon, Saxophonist Bud Freeman, Bass Player Bob Haggart, Drummer Gene Krupa, Trumpeter Jimmy McPartland, Clarinetist Pee Wee Russell, Pianist Joe Sullivan, Trombonist Jack Teagarden. Their enthusiasm has withered little with the years. The album is a remarkable recreation of a style 40 years dead-a style that is reborn in Sullivan's honky-tonk piano and Russell's keening clarinet and, most delightfully, in Teagarden's lumpy but moving vocals in Logan Square...
...turned the listener into a performer is a sometime jazz drummer named Irving Kratka, who ten years ago launched a small record company that prospered briefly in the early LP boom. When business started to wane. Kratka recalled Columbia's earlier, unsuccessful "Add-a-Part" series on 78-r.p.m. disks, decided that the added convenience of LPs might make the idea work. At first, Music Minus One recorded chiefly classical releases, began to rake in the profits when it added jazz. It omits every instrument in the orchestra but the harp, often makes a single piece of music available...
...sort of low-ceilinged Harry Golden. He is low-key, as well - a surprisingly quiet businessman who was born in a Boston slum, learned about money and gambling from his tailor stepfather, "who made $4 a week and liked to play poker." He quit school at 14, became a drummer for a dress company, in seven years had a small chain of suburban retail dress stores, in partner ship with an older brother. Drifting on, he lost $75,000 in the stock market, taught driving to the novice customers of a Bronx Chevrolet dealer, sold religious statuettes to the followers...
Hamilton is perhaps the one drummer around, not excluding Shelly Manne and Buddy Rich, who can make a long solo sound like music. Apparently either the 'cello and flute were flat or someone sabotaged the recording, for the Quintet sounds rather flat. But the solo is typical of Hamilton's best work...
Instead of sinking their money in a leather-topped bar and zebra-striped divans, they hired a good sound engineer to build an acoustically perfect room. In a typical program, Ruff and Mitchell, assisted by Composer-Pianist Robert Helps and Drummer Charlie Smith, presented the U.S. premiére of Paul Hindemith's Sonata for Alto Horn and Piano, followed it with a Ruff-Mitchell composition titled Fugue for a Jazz Trio. The club features a regular string quartet from Yale, and will draw heavily on the talents of such Yale faculty members as Violinist Howard Boatwright, Pianist Seymour...
