...styles. Just as it says on the label, Bassist Williams plays it primitive, with a trio of winds and a powerhouse rhythm section which divides itself between a two-beat Calypso and a hot-blooded shuffle entirely on the cymbals. Of special interest: the polyrhythmic Venezuelan Waltz. Drummer-Vibraphonist Clemendore plays jazz a la George Shearing and includes one hit tune, Princess Charming...
...Meany's more diplomatic vice president, the Auto Workers' Walter Reuther, to come soothe the anger of India's trade unionists. Reuther returned to the U.S. last week after a shining fortnight's good-will mission. He had sat in as a drummer at a village folk dance, got dolled up in a turban, been festooned with countless flowers, made 118 speeches. In a Calcutta auto plant, he had eaten lunch with the workers instead of in the bosses' dining room, explaining, "Hell, I wouldn't eat with them in the States. Why should...
Probably the most fascinating record of Eastern music ever made, the Ragas are played by three instruments: drums, a drone-type stringed instrument, and a melodic stringed instrument. The drummer starts setting up complex rhythm often based on seven beats, over which the melody instrument improvises an increasingly complicated part, while the drone keeps up a fill-in. The music is quite difficult to understand at first, partially due to the strange scales it uses. But repeated hearings brig out the intricate beauty of its very advanced art. It is worthwhile buying the "de luxe" edition, as the explanatory notes...
Last week Benny seemed happier than he had been in a long time. Standout sidemen in Benny's new band: Trombonist Urbie Green and Drummer Mousie Alexander, a graduate, surprisingly, of the contrapuntal Sauter-Finegan band. The arrangements were mostly the old Fletcher Henderson "killer-dillers" that Benny made famous in the '30s, and the swinging improvisations did not seem so improvised any more. But this exhibit from the past-venerable enough to have a movie made about his life-was still able to show a new generation that there is something besides Dixieland, "progressive," and the noise...
This man with the monkey of addiction is Frankie Machine, a professional poker dealer who, in a federal institution, has already won a partial victory over the habit. When he comes home, however, his determination to leave the cards and the heroin and to find a job as a drummer soon breaks again. In just a few days, a lying and rapacious wife, a preying dope peddler, and his own weakness send Frankie screaming to a locked room, to break the habit once more...
