This summer core Dead members Hart, guitarist Bob Weir and bassist Phil Lesh--along with Hornsby, guitarist Steve Kimock (from the Bay Area-band Zero), guitarist Mark Karan (who has played with the Rembrandts), drummer John Molo (from Hornsby's band) and jazz saxophonist Dave Ellis--are touring as "the Other Ones," a band that, while not the Dead, is named after a Dead song and performs material from the Dead catalog. Weir, for his part, was eager to play the old Dead songs again but reluctant to tour under the Grateful Dead name. Says Weir: "Without Pigpen [keyboardist...
...suited to inexpensive and homemade instruments--was all the rage, and in 1957 Lennon formed a band called the Quarrymen. By the following year, the group had been joined by McCartney and his school friend George Harrison, then just 14. In 1960, calling themselves the Silver Beatles, and with drummer Pete Best in tow, they sailed to Germany to play the riotous red-light-district bars of Hamburg, drink Herculean quantities of beer and gulp down handfuls of illicitly energizing pills to keep them stage ready seven nights a week...

In January 1963 a second single, Please Please Me, went to No. 1, and Beatlemania was born...

The quartet, based in Madison, Wis., and consisting of singer Shirley Manson (originally from Edinburgh, Scotland), guitarists Steve Marker and Duke Erikson, and drummer Butch Vig (who produced Nirvana's album Nevermind), had never played outside the studio before recording their debut album, Garbage, in 1995. Their inexperience showed: while the album had its moments, it often felt indecisive and inorganic. In the past three years, Garbage has had a chance to tour, and now it sounds more like...
...band's new CD, A Thousand Leaves (Geffen), is one of its best. The quartet--singer-bassist Kim Gordon, drummer Steve Shelley and singer-guitarists Lee Ranaldo and Moore (who is married to Gordon)--has always been given to experimentation, but on this CD the Sonics bring it off with new vigor and maturity...
