...reportedly clean, Frusciante has left his old problems off his new record. Smiling in his liner notes, he plays everything himself, including the role of producer. Backed only by his guitars, drum machines, and occasional bleeps, keyboards, strings and marimbas, each track is nevertheless a rich melange of melodic and timbral ideas. There will inevitably be those put off by the simple boom-chick of the drum machine and the absence of bass lines, and it would be a nice contrast to hear these songs performed by a sympathetic backing band, but the overall intimate ambiance...
...Gray started experimenting with synthesizers and drum machines, working out catchy grooves and beats and then layering melodies over them. He and his bandmates made White Ladder over the course of four months in Gray's London apartment; it "cost nothing and was recorded on a couple of mikes and some dodgy equipment." That betrayal's at least eight weeks away...

Stillman's claim, even if proven, shows something much fuzzier. We're not talking about Mark Burnett and Jeff Probst dumping out the ceremonial conga drum and stuffing it with "STACEY" ballots in their own handwriting. The notion is that producers indirectly - through pleading? Coaxing? Leading interview questions? - caused contestants to change their minds. Which led them to vote differently. Which led to contestants' being voted off in a different order. Which led to different alliances...
