...kind of self-dare, I decided to immerse myself in the male-weepie canon, even though this meant viewing certain films I had been avoiding for decades, like Brian's Song, Bang the Drum Slowly and The Great Santini. I also read Death of a Salesman and sought out a recording of the old Harry Chapin song Cat's in the Cradle. Certain themes obviously undergird these works: dying fathers, dying athletes, dead fathers, dead athletes. These are romances, to be sure, but instead of the overblown, tear-jerking gestures of male-female romances, the car crashes and death caves...
...later "Modern Log" and "Opportune Moment." Except for the ballad, the songs were similar in form; they began with a Belle and Sebastian like delicacy and built up to a passionate central moment that belied the simplicity of the band's instruments (drummer Shawn Sears plays only a bass drum, snare, tom, and cymbals). "Modern Log" featured Perrino in a delirious state of glossolalia, faintly reminiscent of Eddie Vedder in the early and earnest "Jeremy" days. "I'm a Believer" began with an innocent guitar/bass duet and ended with each band member convulsing in his own private seizure, screaming...
...band has established a sturdy Boston fan base; on Friday, one sweaty devotee professed, "They kick my ass every time." Gilbert even addressed a few audience members by affectionate nicknames--"Beardman" and "That Other Bearded Guy" were both duly acknowledged. If anything, Friday's performance proved that fancy drum kits do not good music make; the heart of rock and roll can be found in a simple trio of a delirious frontman, a competent drummer and a deeply concerned bassist...
Other groups have attempted to cash in on the Boy's success. 'N Sync and Take Five might look good in some low-riding jeans and a sweater with a stripe across the chest; they, too, might be able to sing along with a keyboard and a drum machine. But do they have the spark of true genius? Can they look into 12 cameras like they were looking into your eyes alone and promise never, never to break your heart and somehow, over all those miles of television cables, actually mean it? Do you know that they will someday come...
...original motion pictures, unearthed from a Bollywood bungalow, delivers just that promise. The brothers combine the rhythms of their native Rajasthan with the grooves that came vibing Eastward from America and Europe to kick up the wildest and funkiest corn you ever bought for a lark. Curried with additional drum tracks by DJ Josh Davis, the pieces preserve their essence of unbelievably tacky sexiness. It's hard to pick favorites from a menu so prime and juicy, but "Ganges A Go-Go" and "Punjabis, Pimps & Players" have to be right up there. As a bonus, most tracks are opened with...
