...humanity's theological license had expired, and man could either plunge into nihilism or freedom. This now classical alienation from faith became Heidegger's concern. In his seminal work, Being and Time, he set out to investigate the nature of existence. He tried to discard the Cartesian dualism of mind and matter. Heidegger's man is "thrown" into the void. Confronted by dread, this "authentic person" lives in the full awareness of his extinction; between sentience and death he can find freedom and purpose...

...cult grows steadily and currently claims 30,000 members, 7,000 of whom live in Moon communities. All believe that a "Lord of the Second Advent" (Moon, though this is not stated publicly) will redeem mankind physically by fathering a perfect family. ...inane criticisms of Kilson's analysis have consistently ignored the functional/existential dualism in black culture and thus, ironically, provide tacit admission to the strength of Kilson's position. They intuitively sense the lack of the existential dimension in his analysis, but they fail to analytically account for it. Why? ...book of doctrine, Divine Principle, appeared in 1957, quickly to become the Bible of his followers. It is a curious mixture of Christian fundamentalism, Taoist-like dualism, numerology, and even metaphors from Moon's electrical engineering (the "give and take" between proton and electron, for example, as a model for that between God and man). The book points to a new Saviour from Korea, whose timing is remarkably similar to Moon...

French Philosopher Henri Bergson identified as laughable "something mechanical incrusted upon the living"-his somewhat pedantic phrase for the essential dualism of life. Civilization, said Bergson, unfolds so rapidly that its creator, man, is hard put to keep up. As a result, both culture and language are full of outdated forms. When man is abruptly made aware of them, he responds with chastened or chastening laughter. Why do yesterday's fashions invariably strike us as comic? Because, Bergson thought, they expose the ludicrousness of all fashion-an effort by a creature, born naked, to wear and animate his wardrobe...
