...good old American comic strips have long served a dual audience: kids read them for yuks, while grownups pretend to absorb all sorts of profound meanings from the billowing balloons. Television, on the other hand, has stuck to a single standard: simple-minded cartoons for kids, simple-minded programs of every other variety for grownups. Now all that is changed. Television has brought the comics to adults. It comes in the form of Batman, a new twice-a-week hyperthyroid series on ABC. Produced with an enormous amount of pulp and circumstance, it has become an overnight smash...
NCAA ineligibility would not seriously change Harvard's athletic schedule. Dual meets, even with other NCAA member schools, need not be sanctioned by the NCAA and Ivy League championships would not be affected. Unfolding Technique. Last summer Amsterdam led 30 law students through 250 counties in eleven Southern states to analyze a 25-year collection of 2,600 rape cases-a major study of Southern "dual justice." The new voice seems less to be coming from her than through her-a ventriloquistic trick-but it provokes a growl of lusty approval from the audience. And that in itself is justification aplenty for Alan Jay Lerner to have paid Barbara...
...problem took on new urgency last week as Negro leaders announced the next great goal of the civil rights battle: federal laws reforming Southern "dual justice," or what Atlanta's Southern Regional Council calls "corruption of justice by racism." Time after time, all-white police forces in many Southern states have ignored vigilante beatings, bombings, church burnings-or arrested the victims as the suspects. All-white juries have steadfastly refused to believe the evidence in the trials of whites charged with murdering civil rights workers; only one assailant in 26 such murders since 1960 has been sentenced to prison...
