...invasion of Russia in 1812--still remains, and so do a considerable number of the major characters. Natasha Rostov still falls in love with the noble soldier, Prince Andrey, and out again, and in again just before Andrey dies. Pierre Bezuhov still marries a worthless woman and fights a duel over her. But their actions, as well as those of some of the minor characters, often appear purely mechanical, without any inner logic that makes it all plausible. These people, even Napoleon, appear to be puppets, on the strings of an invisible master who is not allowed to speak...

...industry's best. Visually, it could scarcely be improved. The Technicolor camera sweeps through Palladian palaces and country estates and catches pleasant fragments of the earthly paradise inhabited by Russia's landed gentry-the balls and hunts, the troika races and officers' revels. The duel between Pierre and Dolokhov is fought in a dawnlit forest where snow and awakening sky gleam with as many frosty gradations of white as a pearl fresh from the sea. The Jean Francaix number was cute and innocuous; but the Festival committee ought to have vetoed "The Duel," in which William Dollar's gifted choreography was wasted on incredibly cheap music by Raffaello de Banfield. I would like to have seen one good modern American work, perhaps a new ballet from a New England composer...

...Angeles this week, Abilene Christian's blond blur, Bobby Morrow, paced the sprinters with a world-record-tying 0:10.2 in a 100-meter heat. (At Berkeley doctors hoped that Duke's David Sime, recuperating from a pulled groin muscle, would be able to resume his duel with Morrow at Los Angeles and try for an Olympic berth.) Pitt's lithe Negro star Arnie Sowell easily stood off Olympic Champion Mai Whitfield in an 800-meter heat and set a new A.A.U. record of 1 :49.8. For the first time in four years, World Record Holder Parry...
