Typical of the tricks played is a passage near the beginning where oboe and double bass are in the usual baroque soprano-to-bass opposition. Suddenly the bass drops away but a listener cannot but help hear the implied harmonies in the highly regular resolution. More lighthearted is the duet between trombone and double bass just before the final trio. The two glissandi in the trombone theme are terribly funny and the audience appreciated it. Side One contains an introduction to the concert by Harrison and a sitar and sarod duet by Ravi Shankar and Ali Akbar Khan, a meeting of the superstars of the East as Shankar and Khan rarely appear on stage together. Shankar and Khan faced a Western audience that managed to commit the faux pas of clapping after the musicians finished tuning, thinking that they had finished playing a song, but they managed to sound not too upset and rendered a beautiful performance...
...range from satire to slapstick. Thanks to the precise timing of the City Ballet soloists, the intricate sight gags work to perfection.
