Atlanta's Spelman College harmonized with an apt duet of famous singers as it granted honorary fine arts degrees. One was to Opera Soprano Mattiwilda Dobbs, 53, a Spelman alumna who polished her coloratura with a Marian Anderson Scholarship. The other, fittingly, was awarded the legendary Anderson herself, now 77. Hailed as "the most famous and best loved contralto of our time," Anderson received a standing ovation for her long, path-marking career. Responded she in a brief, upbeat acceptance: "It's all waiting for you out there, and you can make your lives what you want them...
...more pleasing were the duet arrangements of such exotic morsels as Le Bananier and Orfa. These performances, cleanly accented and subtly colored, gave a glimpse of Gottschalk's true originality as a composer. At his best, he adapted the Creole and plantation tunes of his native New Orleans, mixed them with the sinuous rhythms of Latin America, and produced piano works as fresh and insouciant as their titles were evocative: The Banjo, Bamboula, Souvenir de Porto Rico. Steve Harrison as Cousin Kevin is chilling as he produces an amazing picture of sadism and feral, sexual hunger while viciously torturing his helpless cousin. The dancers, led by choreographer Ann Dressler and Beth Seidel, are extremely competent...
Then Hancock joined fellow crossover artist Chick Corea for a series of duet piano concerts, which reconfirmed both players as skilled and important improvisationsts. Both the Quintet and the piano tour served to generate among fusion fans an interest in mainstream jazz, and both were commercially successful. But both projects seem to have been dropped, and Herbie Hancock is back on the road with his funk band...
