...long-maned Californian who has guest-conducted widely and won a solid reputation for his performances of works by such contemporaries as Olivier Messiaen and Steve Reich. His reading of Mahagonny is sharp, clear and briskly energetic (even a bit too much so in the lovely "cranes duet"). Gary Bachlund brings an appropriate touch of Nelson Eddy to the role of the doomed hero, though Anna Steiger (daughter of Rod) plays Jenny with a less happy touch of Jeanette MacDonald. As Lotte Lenya taught a whole generation of admirers, Weill's heroines should sound sexy, metallic and bitter...
...stately and slow. The Russian peasant life in Fiddler on the Roof looks even cornier and campier when deprived of the original's glints of fear and oppression. A protracted, wordless street scene among customers of a speakeasy is unlikely to bring back Billion Dollar Baby. And a danced duet from High Button Shoes, cast with vigorous young performers, defeats the whole sentimental purpose of the original number: to demonstrate that a married couple well along into middle age can not only remain lovebirds but still get their knees up into the air. ...human's necktie. But the film encourages you to vacation in its ingenuity. Drop by the Ink and Paint Club, Toontown's toniest dive, where the password is "Walt sent me," penguin waiters patrol in tuxedos, and Daffy and Donald Duck, together for the first time, perform a piano duet. Meet old friends like Mickey and Bugs, Tweety and Betty Boop, and new ones, like the '80s version of Snow White's dwarfs: Greasy, Wheezy, Smart Ass, Psycho and Stupid. Once the plot gets rolling, and Hoskins is handcuffed to his fugitive client, you may forget that Roger was drawn...
...huffing and puffing to reduce that upholstered posterior, expand that narrow chest and flatten that soft stomach. Even so, he will not give Arnold Schwarzenegger any competition. In fact he found himself gasping at the end of a tough scene in which he and Robert Loggia dance a duet on giant piano keys embedded in the floor of a toy store. "It was exhausting, like jumping rope for ten hours," recalls Hanks...
...laid a 4 1/2-in.-long egg which was placed in an incubator. After 55 days, the developing chick began pecking a hole in the top of its pale green shell. Like midwives, the zoo staff encouraged its efforts by tapping the shell with a thin wire rod. The percussive duet lasted 52 hours, until a hole the size of a quarter had formed. A few hours later, the team carefully removed the remaining fragments and Molloko emerged. By week's end bird handlers were using a condor puppet to preen the rambunctious youngster and feed it 70 minced baby mice...
