The composer has written the girls a soprano duet that recalls Strauss's lyricism. Here and elsewhere, the voices of Radmilla Vasovic Bokacevic and Biserka Cvejic are nicely matched. Among the male singers, Dusan Popovic as Andrei stands out as having a visceral knowledge not only of Prokofiev's music but of every shading of Tolstoy...
...oratorio tradition, Haydn composed Orfeo for a chorus and orchestra much larger than he had previously used. The heavy dose of choral music and the numerous arias in sona ta form make much of the opera sound like an oratorio. The chorus, for example, joins in a love duet with Sutherland and Gedda in the early scenes, sings a lament for the dead Euridice, and in the third act consoles Orfeo with four lengthy passages. But the opera also sparkles with tuneful solos, and concludes with a scene of effective operatic violence: the Bacchanalians who have poisoned Orfeo are swept...

...treacherous syncopation of Bernstein's score, which sometimes leaves stragglers among the singers. The six-piece orchestra under John Forster keeps up with the score amazingly well, although it cries for a little fleshing out. Predictably the most effective numbers are the slowest and the smallest--a duet in a taxi cab and an enchanting quartet in a subway car. The most ragged number is the heavily-syncopated "New York, New York," which could stand some rehearsing to metronomes...
