MILAN: Milanese magistrates have given Italian taxpayers cause to cheer: by pressuring detainees in the country's widespread corruption scandal to yield their ill-gotten gains, they have recovered $63 million so far, most of it from Swiss bank accounts. This amount is clearly just the beginning. Duilio Poggiolini, a former Health Ministry official, for example, is accused of having taken $125 million in gold and silver ingots, gold rubles from the Czarist era, Krugerrands, diamonds and ancient Roman coins. Poggiolini is in jail in Naples; under questioning, his wife referred to the stash as "the savings of a lifetime...
...Duilio Baltodano, Nicaragua's Attorney General, faces the daunting task of trying to return to the original owners millions of dollars' worth of property confiscated by the Sandinistas. Baltodano has logged more than 6,000 restitution claims, but one particular petition has caught his attention: a large house occupied since 1979 by former Sandinista President Daniel Ortega. The motion to evict Ortega will probably be decided in June, and Baltodano seems confident of success. There's just one catch. If the former President refuses to move, the task of evicting him ultimately falls to the army. And Ortega's brother...
...died after hardly a week of filming in 1974, at the age of 60. Mario Monicelli (Big Deal on Madonna Street) completed the movie, which, unfortunately, does little credit to anyone. My Friends concerns the infrequently amusing forays of a group of five stalwarts (Noiret, Ugo Tognazzi, Gastone Moshin, Duilio Del Prete, Adolfo Celi) who break out of their conventional, half-failing lives to have a little fun. This usually involves playing practical jokes-such as slapping in sequence the faces of passengers leaning out the windows of a departing train-and acting in general like sailors on their first...
...career that has become lost in synthetic giddiness. There are 16 Cole Porter tunes, so many that the movie seems to be strung together from a series of song cues. What passes for plot concerns the romances of two couples-Burt Reynolds and, inevitably, Cybill Shepherd; Madeline Kahn and Duilio Del Prete -as they sing and dance through some smoggy dream of the '30s. The couples do not sing very well, though, and in dancing resemble a troop of hikers trying to extinguish a campfire...
...Trying desperately to exonerate the party from blame, M.S.I, leaders offered an $8,500 reward for the capture of the bomb throwers. Eventually, the party itself fingered the culprits: an unemployed la borer named Maurizio Murelli, 19, and Vittorio Loi, 22, the son of former Junior Welterweight Boxing Champion Duilio Loi. However, young Loi later told police that an M.S.I, bodyguard had assigned them to disrupt the rally...
