Partaking in Greek pastries under arches of balloons, Dukakis backers awaited the governor's arrival while watching the evening's sobering returns on large television screens. When negative results were broadcast, the picture was switched to a rock band playing for the party.
Although appearances by comedian Robert Klein, actor Rob Lowe, Senator John Kerry and Dukakis, who spoke shortly after 11 p.m., revived the audience, one supporter described the mood as "restrained, noncommital."
"They are Dukakis emotions, very steady, somber and serious," said Gary Bettger, a Kennedy School of Government student.
In three Cambridge precincts composed mostly of Harvard students, the vote was about 80 percent for Dukakis, 20 percent for Vice President George Bush. Other precincts in which Harvard students were registered also posted huge margins for the Massachusetts governor.
Living up to their billing as liberals, Harvard students registered to vote in Cambridge voted overwhelmingly for Gov. Michael S. Dukakis yesterday in a turnout that poll workers described as very high.
