BOSTON--House and Senate negotiators met privately yesterday to work out differences on a $350 million savings package aimed at reducing Massachusetts' budget deficit, which the administration of Gov. Michael S. Dukakis has pegged at more than $800 million.
The committee agreed with $89 million in line-item cuts targeted by the Dukakis administration, added $16 million in cuts of its own and asked the governor to trim an additional $34 million from the budget.

The initiative would provide "a guaranteed formula that returns to the cities and towns a fair share of tax dollars...the basic services every community needs," said Peabody Mayor Peter Torigian, the committee's chair.
A spokesperson for the governor said Dukakis is optimistic that the Legislature will develop a plan to erase the remainder of the deficit before Christmas.
