...Safekeeping, a witty, Wodehousian gavotte from the confines of an English boys' school to the streets of Harlem, with several beguiling stops between, Mcdonald records the travails of a small boy, heir to a dukedom, who is orphaned during the London blitz and sent off to the uncertain care of a sodden New York City tabloid reporter. Within weeks the boy becomes the target of a Mafia hit man, thereby allowing the author to mix sociology and satire, goofy narrative and authentic terror...

...hi” doesn’t register even a glimmer of recognition as you pass by. Not only do they not know who you are, they seem not to even hear or see you. Has early Alzheimer’s set in? Have they unexpectedly inherited a European dukedom that has placed them above mundane social conventions? Or, are they just afraid you might not say hi back? In any case, Jay Z perhaps put it most aptly when he said, “you do not exist to [them], so vamoose, son of a bitch...

Shohet makes us believe that she could be a wonderful Olivia-in a different production-and Jezek, though truly engaging in his scenes with Faiman, ran a little to the whiny side of the Dukedom. Uche Amaechi, playing Olivia's kinsman, Sir Toby, possesses an amazing voice and stage presence, yet seemed wrong for the role of the scheming drunkard. Little can be done with Sir Andrew (Christian Roulleau '01), but Roulleau managed to turn in one of the most traditionally sound performances...

Perhaps the greatest strength of this unconventional production of "The Tempest" is Freeman's strong conventional performance. Prospero is a magician exiled from his dukedom who seeks revenge. When the men who betrayed him are near the shore of his island, he sends a storm to wreck their ship and bring them all onto the shore. As he plans revenge, oversees the engagement of his daughter Miranda (Jessalyn Gilsig) to Prince Ferdinand of Naples (Scott Ripley) and foils Caliban's plot against his life, Freeman evokes every doubt, conviction and emotion Prospero experiences. He is temperamental and harsh with...
