Now in our golden years, we are finding ourselves accused of greed and selfishness. What a deal, indeed...

...Little Richard and Co.--had faded; the Chicago blues of Muddy Waters mysteriously had never caught on. The Beatles hadn't broken yet. "Trad" (traditional) jazz was what the middle class dudes convinced themselves they enjoyed. It was a mushy, updated version of Dixieland, believe it or not--very dull, very smooth. "Trad" didn't suite Mick Jagger or his friends Keith Richards and Brian Jones...

Officials say they also hoped to make the second-year program more interesting for students, many of whom complain that the year is unproductive because the subject matter is often dull after the first year. The committee studying the second-year program stated that when second-year students were surveyed about the year, "the most commonly used adjective, by far, was 'boring.' Other often used words were 'routine' and 'repetitive'." Simon's screenplay restricts the direction as well as the actions. Even the set design is bland and tiresome: the first father-daughter confrontation is filmed in an annoyingly dull light. The audience's attention is directed away from the screen and toward the repetitious soundtrack. Director Ross ignores the fact that film is a visual medium--more so than the stage on which I Ought to be in Pictures was originally performed: he seems to put his own work on a secondary level to the screenwriter's. This is not a Herbert Ross film: the opening credits...
