WASHINGTON--Secretary of State Dulles sought to reassure Chiang Kai-shek Thursday of continued U.S. support for his Nationalist China government.
Dulles sent a message to Formosa in the wake of Chiang's outcry Wednesday against statements by Dulles the day before.
Dulles said Thursday he wanted to straighten out confusion compounded--what he called "an exaggerated idea of a shift of position on our part...misinterpreting the misinterpretation."
When asked to comment on the most important factor in achieving world peace, Kissinger replied that "the free world is suffering from a lack of moral dynamism." This lack is clearly shown, he indicated, "in the platitudes that Mr. Dulles is fond of using."
Chiang and his Foreign Office aimed their shafts at a statement by Secretary of State Dulles in a Washington news conference Tuesday. Dulles proposed a cut in the Nationalist offshore garrisons in exchange for a cease-fire. He was backed up Wednesday by President Eisenhower.
