When people take their kids out of public schools, they essentially give up that ground to whomever wants to stay in it and dominate the education field. Without the participation of the most promising students and their parents, the educational system is likely to be at best dull and at worst oppressive. RANDALL H. COOK Durham...

Before departing the United Kingdom, I took in the long-running West End production of Yasmina Reza’s Art. The play was as enjoyable as when I first viewed it on Broadway in 1997, and two-thirds of the cast sparkled. The one dull spot? The lone American, George Segal, sadly best known these days for his role on the insipid Just Shoot Me, was flat throughout. Still, I left London having enjoyed three of the four productions and fired up for some good ol’ American theater...

...eastern United States might have already realized this day had turned into hell. The screens that glow in darkened rooms in hundreds of facilities around the country are the linchpin of an air traffic system that manages tens of thousands of flights a day. The system is almost dull in its routine. Controllers and pilots use regular routes, fly prescribed altitudes along decades-old highways in the sky, and most important, are in constant contact. But that dull moniker can't hide the fact that America's newest gateway may be its best. The graceful steel-and-glass structure boasts 40-ft. ceilings, Mongolian granite floors and colorful artwork and architecture that should distract anyone waiting in a long line. "We are trying to make an airport an enjoyable place to be," says Hans Mohrmann, the enthusiastic Dutchman who is president of Schiphol U.S.A., a division of Amsterdam...

...Outside of Japan, Thailand has had perhaps the most disappointing succession of Prime Ministers of any major Asian nation. Since 1991 there have been eight other Prime Ministers, all of whom, at their best, conveyed an image of dull impropriety. (Quick, who was Prime Minister before Thaksin's predecessor Chuan Leekpai? Didn't think you remembered.) Thaksin, on the other hand, has managed to associate himself with wealth, with economic growth, with mobile phones and the Internet. And by now, even remote Thai villages that don't yet have Internet access know it is something they should want...
