Minsk today looks like the set for a 1950s Soviet movie. Its broad boulevards, designed for military parades and tanks, are clean, orderly - and dull. Monotonous rows of Stalinist apartment blocks line the streets, and there are no traffic jams or bright advertising to bring life to the city. The omnipresent police keep crime in check, but also beat up "undesirables" in broad daylight. Some modern shops stock luxury consumer goods - at least in their windows...

...list of inventions left me yawning. There weren't any great breakthroughs to dazzle the imagination. Many of the items were trivial. It's not TIME's fault that the year didn't see the introduction of something fantastic. From the standpoint of new technology, it was a very dull year...

...play’s lack of a serious story becomes apparent. The ridiculousness of most of the proceedings inspires laughs at the expense of characters or situations, so when the audience is asked to really care for the characters rather than laugh at them, the effect is more dull than touching...
