Berlioz' genius becomes most impressive when his work is performed with the insight of conductors like Charles Munch. Mr. Munch knows exactly where dull spots need his stimulus, and where he can let the phrases take their own course. Moreover, he had the advantage of excellent soloists. Flecked with historical idioms like "My liege" and "So be it!", the dialogue is dull and insipidly metaphorical. Actually, they were misfits, "artistic" without being artists, totally unable to cope with life. At first, life on the island was the idyl they had dreamed, but when their money ran out and children came, the cruel business of earning a living in a hard country turned romance into a poverty-draped nightmare. With...
