Candidates for the University track team have been Working daily in the Gymnasium for the last month. The work at present is light, consisting in pulley weight and dumb-bell drills, followed by starting practice in the basement of the Gymnasium, and ending with a run on the outdoor board track. About one hundred candidates for the track team began winter gymnasium work yesterday. Four squads were formed and for an hour each one took light exercise with chest-weights and dumb-bells. The men hurdled for a short time and then ran three laps on the board track. After this work has continued for a week, the sprinters, hurdlers, long and high-jumpers and weight men will be placed in a separate squads and each squad will practice in its special branch. During the last week the work has been light. In the morning the routine has consisted in dumb-bell exercises, starts, falling on the ball and a short run, with kicking practice for the backs. The afternoon work has consisted in starts, falling on the ball, tackling the dummy, kicking for the backs and breaking through for the line men. This is followed by a run. Tomorrow the Mott Haven squad will begin training outdoors, and if the weather continues favorable there will be no more indoor work this season. Since early in January the squad has been working with the weights and dumb-bells, but from now on the training will be entirely different. The sprinters, including the quarter-mile men, will play handball on the asphalt court, and will practice starting, etc. The distance men will work on the road, walking out a considerable distance and taking a run back with a break near the finish.
