...nightly are tugged municipal scows bearing tons & tons of New York City's garbage. Twenty miles south of Scotland Light they dump their burdens into the dark sea, return. Barge E of the city's Sanitation Commission garbage fleet last week completed her usual run, lay, supposedly empty, at her berth almost under Brooklyn Bridge. That Postmaster General Brown was not ready to accept any old expedient to increase postal revenue became clear last week when he turned down a proposition from direct-mail advertisers who wanted him to handle their circulars without putting them to the expense of addressing. They wanted to dump into any post office great bundles of circulars for which they would pay the usual rates. Each letter carrier would have been given a bundle with orders to leave one circular at each stop on his route. Overburdened postmen would have stooped even lower under this enormous new load. Rutgers fellows developed a powdered whey which chicken farmers use to keep parasites from their fowls. A year ago Kraft developed Velveeta, a mixture of cheese and whey...
...Story. The three "tales" in this little book are called: The Mookse and the Gripes, The Muddest Thick That Was Ever Heard Dump, The Ondt and the Gracehoper. So far, only Parts I and II of Work in Progress have been printed: in transition, experimentalist quarterly published in Paris. Say those who profess to understand the design of the whole: Hero H. C. Earwicker, onetime postman, hotelkeeper, shopkeeper, now working in Guinness's brewery, is a Dublin citizen, but a native of Norway. He is married, has children; but his past is not blameless. A girl named Anna Livia...
