...healthy economy cannot tolerate that pace. It wipes away most wage and salary gains, lowers standards of living and sets poor, middle class and rich to snarling at one another. It also weakens the dollar overseas: foreign moneymen rush to dump greenbacks out of fear that inflation will steadily erode their value. Last week the dollar slipped to a record low of 201 Japanese yen, down almost 17% just since January. The dollar's slide, in turn, makes U.S. inflation worse because it raises the prices that Americans pay for imported goods...

...through the pristine glass there is that great swath of the United States, a land that can barely be glimpsed from the interstate highway or sensed from 35,000 ft. To be sure, the view from Bedroom A or the dome car exposes every automobile graveyard, garbage dump, trailer park, parking lot, drive-in, burger joint, shopping mall, sewage plant, forsaken factory, slum and rural hovel in the unwritten guidebook of desecrated America. Homeowner fury has forced the De Kalb assessors to unplug the infernal machine. In Chicago's Cook County, property taxes for many homeowners jumped anywhere from 20% to 100% last year. Some of the most extreme increases are in California, where demand and speculation have...

...Shops to assembly line emporiums. On State Street in Bangor, Me., Clarence Ellis has spent almost half of his 50 years fiddling with unruly appliances. He can fix anything but has little cess with newfangled mechanisms. When he needs an appliance for his own use, he scours the town dump for an old, dependable, repairable machine. "You're better off," he says, "with a good rebuilt vacuum cleaner than a new cheap one." Since it is hard to get parts for an appliance that is more than ten years old, Boston's Lavezzo custom-makes them...
